The role of the Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council
The Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council is an organisation funded by its members for the common good of businesses involved in the exploration, mining and mineral processing and energy intensive manufacturing sectors, along with companies and individuals in the associated supply chains.
It counts among its members all of the main mines and mineral processing operations. In addition a range of companies and individuals who provide goods and services to the minerals industry are members TMEC.
TMEC represents the views of all relevant industry matters to Government - State and Federal, non-government agencies and the public. The council continues to give members a united voice, ensuring the priorities of the sector are well understood and its role as a driver of the Tasmanian economy continues.
In addition to maintaining a strong interest and achievement in Occupational Health and Safety, Emergency Response, Delivered Energy, regulation, legislation and public advocacy, TMEC’s focus in the past year has included the State’s Energy Strategy, Federal Renewable Energy Target, the Freight Equalisation Scheme, regional development and land access.
TMEC has also actively participated in the Government’s initiatives to review and streamline the planning approval and appeal processes, sovereign rights accruing from approvals once given, and red tape reduction. TMEC have made submissions and appeared before Federal Senate Enquiries and Productivity Commission Reviews on matters impacting or have the potential to impact members.

TMEC’s Social Media Campaigns
The Tasmanian Mining and Big Picture campaigns have been key initiatives to provide our businesses, our employees and our communities with an opportunity to have a voice and a platform to go into conversations and publicly support our industries. Both campaigns have been pivotal in balancing minority views, supporting the council’s influence on policy and decisions made by government and regulators and repositioning public perception on the contribution of our businesses to the Tasmanian economy.
