MEDIA RELEASE: MAJOR INDUSTRY GROUPS WELCOME FREIGHT DECISION

Tasmania’s major industry groups have welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to provide a $203 million boost to the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme.

Tasmania’s major industry groups have welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to provide a $203 million boost to the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme.

The Tasmanian Logistics Committee, Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council, Tasmanian Industry Group, Tasmanian Farmers & Graziers Association, Forest Industry Association of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry congratulate the Prime Minister and the Federal Government for acting on the concerns raised by Tasmania’s manufacturers, minerals processors and primary producers.

The Tasmanian Federal members have been crucial in facilitating industry and government meetings allowing frank and open representation of the needs of Tasmanian exporters.

The decision to include overseas exports under the Scheme removes a significant barrier to

Tasmanian businesses, and gives access to competitive international shipping from Australia's major export ports.

"This is a fantastic outcome, not only for existing exporters and the Tasmanians they employ, but for removing the bottleneck for potential investors who would want to utilise the State's significant natural advantages" said Steve Henty, Chairman of the Tasmanian Logistics Committee.

“This is the tweak we needed,” Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association President Wayne Johnston said.

We look forward to seeing the full details of the decision and to working with Government on any fine tuning that may be necessary to deliver the desired outcomes.
