Our survey series continues to underscore the economic benefit to Tasmania of the minerals sector. For example, in 2009/10 coming out of the GFC the mines and smelters spend nearly a billion dollars on goods and services with the majority of this spend within the State. This was 12% down on the previous year but still demonstrated the sectors resilience in the face of the GFC’s substantial dampening of the economy.
In 2009/10, 8 sites canvassed in the survey were in profit with one marginal.
Our survey is undertaken by Metaira Pty Ltd, Burnie on individual site information which is then aggregated and provided to the Minerals Council for public release.
The full survey which follows gives a sound overview of the economic contribution of the industry.
